A Collection of Random Thoughts

I didn’t take the time to organize any thoughts to come up with a post for today, so I’ll just share a bunch of stuff I’ve been thinking about. Welcome to my collection of random thoughts…

Random Thought #1

It’s cold. Snow sucks. If I see another snow flake fall from the sky, I’m gonna punch it in the face. I really need to move to some place where this doesn’t happen. Today.

Random Thought #2

I would consider myself a die-hard Oklahoma State fan. I usually hold out hope that we will shock the world and do something incredible. That hope may have died this year in both football and basketball. There are just some schools that seem like they aren’t meant to win. I’ve come to the realization that I may have attended one of those schools. I hope I’m wrong.

Random Thought #3

Why are black men so quick to be labeled as “thugs”? Richard Sherman was labeled a thug after his rant when they won the NFC Championship. A Stanford graduate labeled a thug. Marcus Smart was labeled a thug after shoving a fan after the fan said something reckless to him near the end of the OK State/Texas Tech game. The same guy who has been praised for the past several years for his exemplary demeanor is now a thug.

The label doesn’t always fit. Usually, it’s just thrown on a black man when he does anything perceived as being out-of-bounds. Black men are scary.

By the way, what would you call a person who has been arrested a time or two for fighting in public? Let’s say this person also has been arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Let’s also say this person has been known to smoke weed and has a gang of tattoos. This person is also known for being belligerent and thinking that he is above the law. Would you label him a thug? I would. I’d also call him Justin Bieber. But we’re not about to label him as a thug. He’s… Canadian.

Random Thought #4

This whole Michael Sam thing baffles me. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, Michael Sam is going to be the first openly gay player in the NFL. His story has dominated sports news all week. The talk is now who will be the next to come out. My question is why do we care so much?

I get that he took a huge risk in coming out to the world. I get that it takes a tremendous amount of courage to do that in any sport but especially in football. I get all that. But putting my personal (and biblical) thoughts on homosexuality aside, why do we care so much? Why do people have to announce to us and the world that they are gay? It’s like gay people owe the rest of us to come clean about who they have relationships with. I don’t understand why that’s necessary. I wouldn’t expect a straight football player to come out and tell us that he slept with 15 different women last year. Why is this any different?

Random Thought #5

The trial of this man in Florida who shot the black teen for his music being too loud could come to a verdict today. I’ll be honest and tell you that I haven’t kept up with this story the same way I did with the Zimmerman trial. That’s not at all because of a lack of interest. It’s totally for a lack of energy. The Zimmerman trial drained me. I don’t think I can invest that much of myself into this one. Black men lost a lot with that verdict. This one CANNOT go the same way. There’s no way. This guy can’t get off. We left the Zimmerman trial feeling pretty low about the value of young black lives in this country. It would drive the nail in the coffin if this guy gets off. There has to be some justice.

That’s it for now. I’ll catch you next time…

As a Canadian, a proud one at that, I am very embarassed by Beiber’s behaviour. He surely does not exemplify who Canadians are. With that said, I beg America not to revoke his visa. Please, please keep him. And in appreciation for keeping him, we will send several hundred tonnes of maple syrup. You will have to make the pancakes though. Thanks. Also, send back Tamia. 🙂

I agree with everything said. Especially the Marcus and the Jordan Davis situation. I really hope the Dunn guy gets convicted. He just has to.
