Bad hip hop… A bottom 10

I like hip hop. I wouldn’t consider myself a hip hop junkie or any kind of expert, but I like it. I like music in general, especially when it’s done well; so in that regard, I guess I can appreciate the artistry of hip hop. And since it is the art of it all that draws me in, I hold a special place in my heart for bad hip hop. It’s a dark place… dark and cold. Throughout the years there have been some really great moments in hip hop… but there have also been some really bad ones. Whether it be a bad song by a good artist, a bad artist, or just a bad moment, hip hop has had it’s moments that seriously make me wonder if the gift of hearing is something that I want to continue to have for the rest of my life. I created a bottom 10 of all these songs/artists/moments. Well start with number 10 and count down to the worst. Here we go…

_

8. Pro athletes that try to rap… All of them

There have been a ton of professional athletes that have tried their hand at hip hop. The list includes Deion SandersAllen Iverson, Shaq, Kobe, even Jason Kidd. All of them were better off sticking to their respective sports.

7. Drake

I expect to catch flack here, but dude is awful. I just can’t take him. Bomani Jones, a sports writer at SB Nation, has an interesting take on Drake (5:10 mark). I tend to agree.

6. Diddy (as an artist)

Diddy is a brilliant business man. I can’t deny that the dude knows how to make money. He knows how to spot talent, and he knows how to position said talent to be successful. Unfortunately for everyone on earth that has ever heard any of his music, his eye for talent only works one way. Dude is a disaster in the booth.

5. Plies

I may catch flack for this one too, but you can’t convince me that Plies doesn’t belong squarely on this list. In fact, every time I think of him, I think of this parody (contains bad language).

4. You remember when Nelly and Tim McGraw teamed up? Yeah, that

3. Bangs

You remember Bangs? Yeah, his whole career fits in here. I’m not sure who he shared these tracks with that told him he had talent or that continuing to do music was a good idea, but that person lied something terrible with no regard for my ears. Unforgivable.

2. Lil Wayne and Baby slob each other down

Does there need to be any commentary here? I’ve seen a lot of routines dudes perform when they dap each other up. I’ve seen snaps, hand gestures, all that. Never have I seen a full-frontal mouth kiss in that routine ever. Not okay, homie. Not okay.

1. Any song ever made, any dance ever done, any word ever spoken in the career of Soulja Boy

It’s no secret that I can’t stand what this dude has done to music. I will give him that some of his songs are catchy, but I shouldn’t be able to recreate his tracks using my index finger and the piano app on my iPad.  He embodies so much of what I don’t like in our culture, but he’s been rewarded for it (until recently). He’s the absolute worst.

That’s it for now. If you see things differently, let me know in the comment section. The truth is that most of the hip hop that I listen to has a Christian message in it. The things I’ve listed here are just things I’ve noticed from a distance. Let me know what you think.

Until next time…
