OKC Thunder Free Agency 2014

It is Wednesday, and the 2014 NBA Draft is a day away. As NBA teams retool, the Oklahoma City Thunder is a team that needs to do the same. It was apparent from this year’s post-season that the Thunder need to revamp their roster in order to add quality to their starting line-up and depth to their bench.

But what moves should the Thunder make? Should they trade a draft pick? Should they draft a veteran or trade a player on their current roster? Below I list 5 moves graded A through F that squad should do this off season to improve their chances at maintaining a top-level roster capable of competing for an NBA championship next season.

Grade: A

Sign:

  • DeJuan Blair (back up PF)
  • Luol Deng (to start at SF)

Trade:

  • Trade 6.7 mil dollar trade exception for Kyle Korver

Draft:

  • 21st Pick: Shabazz Napier (UConn)
  • 29th Pick: Markel Brown (OkST)

Release:

  • Amnesty Kendrick Perkins (clear money to sign Deng)
  • Caron Butler
  • Thabo Sefalosha

Grade: B

Sign:

  • Marcin Gortat (starting C)

Trade:

  • Trade: K. Perkins, 2014 picks 21 and 29 and Perry Jones

For: Aron Afflalo (to start at SF)

  • Trade 6.7 mil dollar trade exception for Kyle Korver

Release:

  • Caron Butler
  • Thabo Sefalosha

Grade C:

Sign:

  • Paul Pierce (to start SF)
  • DeJuan Blair (back up PF)

Trade:

  • Trade 6.7 mil dollar trade exception for Kyle Korver

Draft:

  • 21st Pick: Shabazz Napier (UConn)
  • 29th Pick: Markel Brown (OkST)

Release:

  • Amnesty Kendrick Perkins (clear money to sign Pierce)
  • Caron Butler
  • Thabo Sefalosha

Grade D:

Sign:

  • Trevor Ariza (to start SF)
  • Mike Miller (back-up SG)
  • Nazr Mohammed (back up PF)

Draft:

  • 21st Pick: Shabazz Napier (UConn)
  • 29th Pick: Markel Brown (OkST)

Release:

  • Caron Butler
  • Thabo Sefalosha

Grade F:

Sign:

  • Mo Williams (back up PG, move Reggie Jackson to start)
  • Caron butler (back-up SG)

Draft:

  • 21st Pick: Shabazz Napier (UConn)
  • 29th Pick: Markel Brown (OkST)

Release:

  • Thabo Sefalosha

Grades A thru C would be ideal. The worst possible thing for the Thunder to do is nothing. It is clear that they have missing pieces to their team; Thabo digressed this year, Caron Butler did not play well in the post season, and the Thunder’s depth was exposed in the playoffs. Durant’s contract is up in two years, so the Thunder should be in win-now mode if they want to guarantee to re-sign him. Acquiring a starting SG who is a two-way player is key to the Thunder establishing themselves as NBA title contenders next year and in the future.
