Tebow Haters Should be Ashamed of Themselves
On Tuesday, the New England Patriots announced the signing of the former New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow. This occurred 6 weeks after he was cut by New York and just in time for the start of the three-day Patriots minicamp that runs through Thursday.
Now I know what you are thinking. You probably think I’m going to talk about how Tebow is a great pick-up for the Patriots because of his exceptional leadership and heart, which in many ways, is unsurpassed. Or you probably think I’ll affirm the fact that he led the Broncos to an 8-8 season finish after a dismal 1-4 start, and that he finished the regular season with 1,729 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and 660 rushing yards (including 6 rushing TDs). Or the fact that his faith is a testament that prayer works. No, I will say no such things.
The reason why Tebow haters should be ashamed of hating him is because Tebow is the manifestation of the American dream.
The American dream essentially declares that the opportunity for prosperity, success, achievement and upward mobility can be achieved through dedication, commitment, perseverance, and hard work.
Tim Tebow is living proof of the American dream. He proves that if a person believes in his/her self and works hard towards achieving a goal, they can achieve any goal they set their mind to. Think about it: Tim Tebow cannot pass/throw a football and he is a quarterback in the National Football League. He has won 2 college football championships and taken a dead-in-the-water NFL team to the playoffs and he doesn’t possess the capacity or ability to play the position.
Tebows hard work and dedication is the reason why he was selected in the first round of the NFL draft and was the starter for an NFL team. Kids everywhere who sees Tebow succeed will know that, despite how poorly skilled they may be, despite how tall or big they are, and despite what obstacles lie in their way, they can achieve any goal if they believe in themselves and work hard. THIS is the American dream.
When great players like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Peyton Manning play great at their respective sport, sports fans everywhere appreciate their remarkable play. As a society, we applaud athletes who possess the natural ability to play the game. These players work to perfect their craft and accolades that reward their hard work are certainly warranted.
However, Tebow personifies the American dream due to his handicap –his inability to perfect his craft. That’s right. It is BECAUSE of his inability to play quarterback why he is a perfect example of how the American dream is still very real. He shows that one can accomplish great goals with hard work and believing in yourself alone. You don’t need to be the best, the smartest, the strongest, or the fastest. Tebow teaches us all that we can achieve any goal we set our mines to if we simply believe in ourselves and work hard work.
So, shame on you Tebow haters! Why would you want such an inspiring role model (and model citizen might I add) to fail at fulfilling his dream? Why would you want kids across America to forsake their dreams because they feel they are not good enough (or people tell them that they aren’t good enough)?. Why don’t you want these kids to be inspired by someone who gave all that he could to what he loved and he succeeded because of his diligent efforts? For shame. Tim Tebow is an inspiration, and his achievements should be exalted, not shunned. Hating Tebow is, in a sense, unpatriotic. Shame on you, Tebow haters.
